Album Production

For many years there was only one version of a producer: a record producer. Nowadays however, many people get confused because there are 2 kinds of producers:

  • Record Producers
  • Beat Producers

These people's respective functions are outlined in the corresponding articles below. Hopefully we can help clear up the confusion...

Record Producers

The purpose of having a record producer is to receive real-time constructive feedback and to be given strong and focused direction into what you are trying to achieve. A producer plays many roles in the album recording process, and every record needs a different approach. Working mainly as a link between the listener and the artist, a good producer is one who SEES the music for its potential and can help the artist develop it further. Production is a collaborative art.

2 freelance production artists work @ SCS:

Thaddeus Moore

Beliefs around what Thaddeus does as a producer are summed up with this:

"Challenge the artist to be all they want to be, by helping them understand what a listener hears in their music. Its great really, because I get to be a fan and like a band member at the same time!"

"I am here to help the artist understand what the listener hears, and in turn be an active player in the dynamic of the album. Also, to be an advocate of the artist to the label and vice- versa. Good producers walk that line with grace. Look at every favorite record in your collection. I'll bet at least 2 albums by different artists share the same producer- Rick Rubin, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, David Botrill, Nigel Godrich, Tchad Blake, Andy Wallace? Its all about the right fit. Just like adding a new drummer, keys, or guitar player, etc... Many good artists get the wrong producer stuck to them by a big label or whatnot, and voila!- bad record. The producer you choose must fit your style... and GET what you are saying with your music!!! Nuff said? I am willing to travel to any good studio near you to work, and/or bring you to my studio to complete a project. Please send me links/songs to hear what you have going."

Dan believes that a good engineer/producer is one that backs up their technical knowledge and experience with a true love and enthusiasm for music and the people who make it.

Currently, Dan has several ongoing projects at SCS, and installs corporate, worship, and P.A. systems for Pro Sound and Video in downtown Eugene.

Beat Producers

A beat producer is someone who creates original compositions of rhythmic structures that a rapper or soul artist writes lyrics for. Beats can be created exclusively for one artist or licensed out to multiple parties. Depending on the arrangement, this is generally where this relationship ends...

Though sometimes, an artist will use the same beat producer for many albums and have them tailor beats to their style and even arrange songs or parts. In this case, the producer would give sway to the final outcome of an album, just as album producers might.

One of our crew just happens to be a serious beat producer:

Casey Izdepski

Originally from Edmonds, Washington- Casey comes from a musical family including a sister in Broadway musical theater. Singing in jazz, gospel, and classical music choir's at the college level, as well in small ensembles, has given him a skill base and understanding of what Vocalists need from a recording engineer.

Playing guitar -mainly rock, funk, and roots, led him to begin producing beats for hip-hop tracks years ago and now has several years experience recording various styles of rap and hip-hop vocals. He is also currently studying guitar and vocal performance at the University of Oregon.

He made the leap into recording to help the hip-hop scene grow in potential, but is very interested in working in many genre's. His main goal is to be involved in music and recording for life.
